Threatened Skies Lecture

From: $25.00

Astronomy in the era of satellite mega constellations

In this lecture, Fred Watson discusses the new era of satellite communications and how we expect up to 100,000 spacecraft in low Earth orbit by the end of the decade.

This unprecedented crowding of orbital space is driven by cheaper launches and the demand for fast global internet access. Affected communities include professional and amateur astronomers, those with a cultural investment in the sky and also the ‘off the grid’ community of Lord Howe Island.

This lecture outlines both the threats and the opportunities that the new era brings to the world of skywatching worldwide.
